Conor McLean, Review of Dante by Daidalos (2026)

“Daidalos‘s Dante is a symphonic black metal reimagination of Dante’s Inferno, released on February 20, 2026. The album follows the timeline of Inferno, and interlude tracks like “Minos” break up the project based on events in the narrative. The lyrics also follow the story, with “Shadows of a Poet who has lost his Way of Life/Leading down the underworld/Where withering Sunlight dies” in the song “Inferno” reflecting Dante-the-pilgrim’s state at the beginning of Inferno. The vocals differ from the traditional black metal screaming sound—Daidalos instead uses a retching sound throughout the album that suggests the putridity of Hell. Although the album’s cover points to it, Cocytus is not well represented toward the end of the album, leaving the listener with a lackluster conclusion.”    —Conor McLean
