Ole Malmgren, The Divine Comedy in Seven Days (2020-)
The Divine Comedy in Seven Days is an opera composed by Ole Malmgren. The Italian libretto draws from Dante’s poem, and the English translation is Mary Jo Bang’s. Of the origins of the project, Malmgren writes, “After working on operas and musicals for many years, in late 2019, I decided to explore working on something in Italian. That’s when I happened upon Dante’s Divine Comedy. After realizing how much material there was on the Comedy, I spent some months researching various translations, biographies, books of commentary, etc. and, at some point, I decided to begin working on this opera” (“The Opera Project“).
Malmgren has completed Inferno and Purgatorio, following some five years of work. Paradiso is in progress, and the premiere is expected in 2027-2028.
